Young Carers in school

Young carers may experience particular challenges on their capacity to engage in learning due to their caring role.

The 2013 Health and Wellbeing Survey of Secondary School aged young people in Renfrewshire showed that 1 in 5 secondary school pupils in Renfrewshire care for a family member with a disability, long term illness, drug/alcohol problem or mental health issue. Our Young Carers Education Worker, Lauren works closely with schools, to raise awareness and help facilitate in school support for young carers.

Awareness raising workshops can be facilitated for Primary 4 – S6, these will be specifically tailored to suit the age range of the audience in order to:

  • To increase self awareness of their own responsibilities and in turn, help some young people self-identify as a young carer.
  • To give pupils an insight into the difficulties that young carers may face which can help to reduce the stigma among peer groups.

Our Young Carers Resource Worker Lauren can also help facilitate various supports in schools for young carers, such as:

  • Group/ Peer support
  • One to One support
  • Peer led homework support
  • Support though transitional periods, such as leaving school.

Please contact Lauren McGowan on enquiries@renfrewshirecarers.org.uk or call 0141 887 3643 if you would like involvement from the Young Carers Project in your school.

Please note, Lauren’s working days are Thursday and Fridays.
